The passing of the HITECH Act of 2009 mandated additional guidelines for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
On August 24, 2009 the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued interim Security Breach Notification rules mandating compliance by September 23, 2009. All Covered Entities (CEs) and Business Associates (BAs) as defined by HIPAA are required to comply.
