Holiday warm fuzzies for EHR vendors

Day three of our 12 Days of Christmas Posts takes a look at some of the biggest EHR vendors who made Health IT news this year in some unexpected ways. From philanthropy and sports to talk TV, these companies used their resources and imagination to capitalize on their market positions and keep their brands front and center with outside-the-Christmas-box marketing strategies.

GE Healthcare took their EHR to the Olympics in London this summer and the whole world watched. Using GE’s Centricity Practice Solution, the US Olympic Team managed the health records of their 700 athletes and 3000 staff members. Health IT gold all the way.

In November eClinicalWorks announced the National Football League will be implementing the eClinicalWorks EHR across the organization. Girish Kumar Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks said “Being a fan of the NFL makes this particular project that much more meaningful.” Also in November Cerner announced it had signed the National Basketball Association to use its EHR to centralize the medical record for every athlete in the league in one cloud-based location. Click here to read the full article from Healthcare Informatics.

Continuing on our sports theme roll, we were glad to see Greenway Medical’s continued support and sponsorship of PGA golfer Jason Dufner. Dufner was a 2 time winner on the tour this year and gave a heroic performance in the USA’s heartbreaking loss at the Ryder Cup. He’s currently ranked 9th in the world.

More Disruption Please. That’s what athenahealth is asking for? Yep. In October the company hosted their 2nd annual More Disruption Please Conference.  athenahealth founded the More Disruption Please program to “bring together inventive, forward-thinking minds to change the status quo in health care.”

Allscripts makes this list with their Open App Challenge. The challenge asks: Are you ready to Start a Revolution? and offers contest payouts totaling a whopping $750,000.  Sponsored by Health 2.0, the challenge encourages a broad community of developers and vendors to ‘Start a Revolution’ by designing and integrating applications for Allscripts Open EHR software.

Practice Fusion got some Oprah love and who doesn’t want that?  Oprah’s production company Harpo produces The Dr. Oz show and the recent December 13 episode had “Dr. Oz on Location! The Biggest Life Saving Hour in Oz History.” The show featured real life case studies from Dr. Oz’s  national 15-Minute Physical, conducted in six cities using Practice Fusion’s free, web-based EMR.

And last but certainly not least, McKesson recently pledged $1 million worth of electronic health record software to physicians providing charity care to the needy. The company has a long history of philanthropy and community involvement. The McKesson Foundation alone pledges $5 million annually as part of its Corporate Citizenship program.
