Florida HIE Now Covers Nearly 1 in 5 Patient Beds in the State

Florida HIE and Harris

Melbourne, FL, July 9, 2013 –University of Florida Health and Florida Hospital are now securely exchanging patient health information with the Florida Health Information Exchange (HIE) Patient Look-Up Service developed by Harris Corporation – bringing the HIE coverage to about 9,000 patient beds, or nearly 20 percent of patient beds in the state.

The service allows healthcare organizations and their affiliated users to query medical records of other participating healthcare organizations for individual patient data. The secure information exchange facilitates patient care, diagnosis, and course of treatment; enhances communications between hospitals, physicians and other providers; and reduces orders for duplicate tests, procedures, and medications.

UF Health (formerly UF & Shands) and Florida Hospital (Adventist Health System) join Strategic Health Intelligence and Atlantic Coast HIE, which came online in May 2013. By June 2014, the Florida Health Information Exchange will include up to 20 participating entities across the state, including seven currently in the onboarding phase and eight in the planning phase. The service also will connect to providers outside of Florida through the nationwide eHealth Exchange.

“The continued expansion of the Patient Look-Up service will lead to better quality healthcare for more Florida citizens and reduce administrative costs for providers from Pensacola to Miami and everywhere in between,” said Vishal Agrawal, president, Harris Healthcare Solutions. “By securely sharing patient data among a growing number of providers across the state, Harris is giving providers the most complete – and current – medical record possible when and where it’s needed at the point of care.”
