Life sciences span a wide range of disciplines that study living organisms in six categories, from molecules and cells to ecosystems and human health. The category that intersects in our world is Applied Life Sciences. And more specifically these fields that translate biological knowledge into practical solutions.
- Biotechnology – using living systems for technology and innovation
- Pharmacology – drug action and development
- Biomedical Science – disease mechanisms, diagnostics, therapeutics
- Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine – cell-based therapies
In this monthly report you will find news and highlights in the Applied Life Sciences.

The Next Industrial Revolution May Begin Inside a Living Cell
Prolific Machines is helping define a new frontier in biomanufacturing through its pioneering work in photomolecular biology — an emerging field that uses light to help guide how living cells behave. At the center of the company’s work is a powerful idea: if cells are already capable of producing some of the most complex biological products on earth, then the future of manufacturing may depend on learning how to communicate with those cells more precisely.
Stanford’s New Microscope Reveals Living Cells like Never Before
Stanford scientists have developed a revolutionary microscope that reveals the hidden inner workings of living cells in real time, without the fluorescent labels that can interfere with observations. The breakthrough could provide new insights into cancer, infectious diseases, and how drugs interact with cells.
Sharp Expands Autoinjector and Pen Assembly Capacity in US and EU to Support Growing Injectable Demand
Sharp Services, a pharmaceutical packaging, clinical trial services and sterile manufacturing company, announced progress on the expansion of its autoinjector and pen assembly network. Building on its previously announced $20 million investment, Sharp is adding assembly capacity to support injectable programs as well as additional 2-8°C temperature-controlled storage designed to support clients as they progress from development through commercialization.

RxTran Awarded Second U.S. Patent for Technology That Lets Pharmacists Verify a Translation They Cannot Read
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted Language Scientific a second patent covering RxTran’s Transduction technology, the system that lets a pharmacist confirm a translation is correct even when they cannot read the language it is written in. Patent US 12,602,554, “Systems and Methods for Producing Reliable Translation in Near Real-Time,” was granted April 14, 2026, and is assigned to Language Scientific.
Biomedical
Senseonics Initiates First-in-Human Study of Freedom, Designed to be the World’s First CGM System with No On-body Component
Senseonics Holdings, Inc., a diabetes company redefining continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with long-term implantable sensing technology, announced the initiation of its first-in-human clinical study evaluating Freedom, an investigational next-generation CGM system designed to communicate directly with a mobile device without the need for an external on-body transmitter.
Oxford Scientists Discover how Viruses Build Themselves Without a Blueprint
Scientists have captured virus-like particles assembling themselves step by step, revealing how a surprisingly simple process of trial and error produces complex structures with remarkable precision. The discovery uncovers a crucial molecular turning point that speeds up assembly and could lead to new ways to disrupt viruses and develop vaccines.
Verily Health and Autoimmune Registry Partner to Build Cross-Disease Research Infrastructure for Autoimmune Conditions
Verily Health Inc., a healthcare data intelligence company, announced a strategic partnership with Autoimmune Registry Inc. (ARI), a nonprofit nominated for the inaugural 2026 Prix Galien Patient First Award in Honor of Michael J. Fox for its work studying autoimmune diseases, the populations they affect, and how they co-occur and progress over time. Through the partnership, Verily Health will provide the patient engagement, research infrastructure, and analytics needed to expand ARI’s registry and make its data accessible to researchers across the autoimmune disease community.
Gene by Gene Collaborates with Children’s Mercy to Advance Whole Genome Sequencing for Pediatric Rare Disease Research
Gene by Gene, a genomics laboratory specializing in high-throughput sequencing and precision medicine, announced a research collaboration with Children’s Mercy to provide Whole Genome Sequencing services in support of the Children’s Mercy Research Institute’s precision medicine initiatives, such as the Genomic Answers for Kids program.

FDA Authorizes Novel Clinical Trial Exploring Artery-Delivered Stem Cells for Knee Osteoarthritis
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine researchers are preparing to launch an innovative clinical trial that will investigate whether delivering stem cells through arteries supplying the knee can reduce pain and improve function and quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis who have exhausted other nonsurgical treatment options.
New Signaling Pathway Enhances Blood Stem Cell Transplantation Outcomes
Gene therapies are used to treat many different blood disorders. However, blood stem cells often fail to achieve their full potential after transplantation. UZH researchers have now explored an alternative signaling pathway that could provide a remedy. Blood stem cells are rare cells in the bone marrow that produce the blood and immune cells needed throughout life, thus ensuring that the blood and immune system in the body are renewed. This is why they are also used in bone marrow transplantations and novel gene therapies for treating a range of blood disorders. However, during gene therapy the stem cells need to be processed in the laboratory prior to transplantation, which can cause them to lose some of their regenerative capacity and reduce the chance of the overall treatment being successful.
