Massachusetts General Hospital Uses Machine Learning To Predict Cancer
By Kayla Matthews, HealthIT writer and technology enthusiast, Tech Blog

Discovering that you have a breast lesion is a scary thing. You wonder whether it could be cancerous and if you’ll need surgery. Typically, doctors recommend an operation, even if the lesion might not be malignant. If it’s not, though, the unnecessary surgery could present more risk than benefit. Through a partnership with MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital are working with a machine learning tool that could help prevent these unnecessary surgeries. Opioid Addiction: Dance of the Lost Souls – Can NLP Cut In?
By Dr. Elizabeth Marshall, MBA, Director of Clinical Analytics, Linguamatics
Twitter: @Linguamatics

“You can’t save everyone” I painfully remind myself after hearing about the fentanyl overdose of the 29-year-old man that we so desperately tried to help over the years. A man that floated in and out of our lives – when he wanted to work (as a day-laborer for our construction projects,) stay sober and turn his life around. After four years of this sad dance, we had suspected he might be dancing his final dance after we discovered he was out of rehabilitation and nowhere to be found. 5 Ways a Hacker May Target Your Small Business
By Art Gross, President and CEO, HIPAA Secure Now!
Twitter: @HIPAASecureNow

Cyberattacks only happen to large corporations because they hold the most personal and sensitive data, right? Wrong. While the media often leads us to believe cyberattacks are only occurring on high-profile organizations holding a lot of data, the statistics show us otherwise. An article on Information Security Buzz takes a look at 5 ways hackers might target your small business and how you can protect yourself from an attack. Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

For Better Patient Outcomes, Free Up Memory and Increase Processing Speed…in Clinicians
By Todd Plesko, VP of Product Strategy, Vocera Communications, Inc.
Twitter: @VoceraComm

Load down your computer or phone with memory-hungry programs, and you’ll notice it just doesn’t work as well. It slows down, it freezes up, and the battery wears down at an accelerated rate. Humans are much the same — give them too many competing demands on their mental bandwidth, and they become less and less effective at completing important tasks. In a hospital setting, this problem can have life and death consequences. Nurses and other clinicians are inundated with so many alarms and alerts throughout the day, that they reach what’s known as “peak cognitive load.” Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

Using the Last 90 days of MIPS 2017 to Prepare for 2018 Reporting
By Hannah Lerner Harrison, MSPH, Senior Quality Programs Coordinator, TSI Healthcare
Twitter: @tsihealthcare

When the 2017 Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) Final Rule was released fall 2016, it was branded as a “transition” year. It truly is a transition allowing increased flexibility and limited opportunity to fail. For 2017, CMS estimated only 8.1% – 5.3% of clinicians would fail. As we move into the last 90 days of the 2017 MIPS reporting period, how do practices set themselves up to achieve their highest MIPS Composite score? Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

MIPS: The Tale of 90 Days
By Anshu Jindal, COO, MyMipsScore
Twitter: @MyMipsScore

The tale of 90 days of MIPS reporting has been told and retold many times, and like it is with most tales, it has many versions. Unlike most tales, where you can enjoy any version of your liking, the key facts in this tale have long-term implications for healthcare providers and organizations, both in terms of money and reputation. So, please read carefully. My attempt here is not to tell you another version of this 90-days tale, but to tell you about the facts that you need to focus on in 2017 when you come across any version of this tale. MIPS: All Is Not As It Appears
By Jim Tate, EMR Advocate, MACRA/MIPS Subject Matter Expert
Twitter: @JimTate

The MACRA/MIPS program is complex enough without having to decide what is real and what is not. I recently wrote a post entitled “Fake News – MIPS Style” and in the past week I have come across additional examples of misleading information that only serves to muddy the waters. Sometimes it is not what is said but what is omitted that can be the problem. Here are a few items to be aware of in your quest to achieve a high MIPS score. Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

In December 2016, several industry experts contributed to an article for HITECH Answers with their health IT predictions for the upcoming year. Bill Marvin, CEO and Co-Founder of InstaMed, discussed the trend of consumerism due to rising payment responsibility and the need for action in 2017 to address the new role of consumers as key stakeholders in the industry. In Bill’s words: “consumer-centric organizations are going to have a great 2017!” Continue reading on RCMAnswers.net…

Payers and providers are rapidly entering into outcomes based contracts that directly support the industry’s much coveted triple aim: improved care, enhanced patient experiences and reduced costs.
