On the 3rd Friday of every month, HITECH Answers hosts HIPAA Chat with security expert Steve Spearman. The broadcast offers listeners an opportunity to ask Steve questions pertaining to a particular topic related to HIPAA in a very informal, blog-talk style format. It’s a fast-paced, one hour program where Steve and I, along with our audience, tackling some of the toughest issues facing providers in this challenging security environment.
Many times we are joined by a guest and this Friday we’re lucky to have Lee Kim, Director, Privacy and Security for HIMSS North America, on the broadcast to share her insights on the topic of cyber security and discuss some of the results of a recent survey conducted by HIMSS.
From the HIMSS news release on the survey:
Cybersecurity was identified as an increased business priority over the past year according to 87 percent of respondents in the newly released 2015 HIMSS Cybersecurity Survey. Two-thirds of those surveyed also indicated that their organizations had experienced a significant security incident recently…this research reflects continued cybersecurity concerns by healthcare providers regarding the protection of their organizations’ data assets.
At the top of the broadcast Lee will share key findings from the HIMSS survey including:
- Two-thirds of respondents’ healthcare organizations experienced a significant security incident in recent past; majority reported limited disruptions with 21% having loss of data
- Respondents have an average level of confidence with the organization’s ability to protect IT infrastructure & data
- Respondents are highly concerned about the prospect of a future attack (e.g., phishing, negligent insiders, APT)
