Bobby Mukkamala, MD, inaugurated as 180th AMA president
Bobby Mukkamala, M.D., an otolaryngologist from Flint, Mich., was sworn in recently as the 180th president of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest and most influential physician organization.

Jim O’Neill Sworn in as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services
Jim O’Neill was sworn in on June 9th as the Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. With decades of experience at the intersection of health care, technology, and public service, O’Neill will help Kennedy oversee an agency that includes the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Administration for Children and Families, and many others.
New Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy National Coordinator for Health Information Technology
ASTP is pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas Keane as the new Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/National Coordinator for Health IT. His leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Health IT and HHS’s technology strategy.
HHS Secretary RFK Jr Replaces CDC Vaccine Advisory Panel With New Appointees
On June 12th Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr appointed eight new members to the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), just two days after removing all 17 previous members. The newly named appointees have drawn scrutiny for affiliations with vaccine-skeptical movements and controversial views on public health.

HHS Announces Paula M. Stannard as Director of the Office for Civil Rights
On June 4ht the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights announced the appointment of Paula M. Stannard as Director of the Office for Civil Rights. In this role, Director Stannard is the Department’s chief officer and adviser to Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. concerning the implementation, compliance, and enforcement of Federal health information privacy, security, and breach notification rules under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well as Federal civil rights, conscience, and religious freedom laws in HHS’ jurisdiction.
Fabbricatore joins fight to rescue migrant children as ORR Senior Advisor
On May 19, 2025, retired ICE official John Fabbricatore stepped into a new role as Senior Advisor at the Office of Refugee Resettlement, just as the agency faces intense scrutiny for failing to track unaccompanied migrant children after release.
