Dr. Vindell Washington, ONC’s New Principal Deputy National Coordinator

VindellWashingtonMD-200Below is an email Dr. Karen DeSalvo sent to ONC staff announcing Dr. Vindell Washington as ONC’s new Principal Deputy National Coordinator effective January 25, 2016.

I am thrilled to announce that Dr. Vindell Washington will join ONC as Principal Deputy National Coordinator on January 25th.

Dr. Washington most recently served as the President of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) Medical Group and as the health system’s Chief Medical Information Officer. FMOLHS, headquartered in Baton Rouge, LA, provides care to 40 percent of Louisiana’s population. At FMOLHS, Dr. Washington led over 500 physicians, advanced practitioners and 1,400 employees in more than 70 care locations, with a focus on transforming ambulatory care delivery models. Under Dr. Washington’s leadership as senior accountable executive for IT, the health system was an early adopter of technology, including the integration of medical device information into the electronic health record and the widespread deployment of clinical decision support within the provider documentation workflow. In addition to his executive responsibilities at FMOLHS, Dr. Washington maintained his schedule as a staff physician in the emergency department.

Before joining FMOLHS, Dr. Washington served as CEO of Piedmont Healthcare Management Group in Charlotte, NC, where he led the development efforts of coding and billing process technologies. Prior to his service at Piedmont Healthcare Management Group, he was President and CEO of Piedmont Emergency Medicine Associates, also located in Charlotte, NC, where he led a 70 provider hospitalist medicine and emergency medicine group.

Dr. Washington received a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, an M.D. from the University of Virginia, and an M.S. in Healthcare Management from the Harvard University School of Public Health. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Here at HHS, Dr. Washington will provide high level executive direction and leadership for all ONC programs, operations, and policies and will advance key Administration initiatives, such as delivery system reform, the Precision Medicine Initiative, and implementation of the Interoperability Roadmap.

I hope you all will join me in warmly welcoming Dr. Washington to the team.

Best,
kd
