CMS Selects Seven Finalists to Advance to Stage 2 of the AI Health Outcomes Challenge

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) (@CMSGov) announced the Participants (the Finalists) selected to advance to Stage 2 of the CMS Artificial Intelligence (AI) Health Outcomes Challenge. The CMS AI Challenge was launched in March 2019 by the CMS Innovation Center in collaboration with the American Academy of Family Physicians and Arnold Ventures (formerly the Laura and John Arnold Foundation).

The Finalists are:

  • Ann Arbor Algorithms (Sterling Heights, MI)
  • ClosedLoop.ai (Austin, TX)
  • Deloitte Consulting, LLP (Arlington, VA)
  • Geisinger (Danville, PA)
  • Jefferson Health (Philadelphia, PA)
  • Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. (Princeton, NJ)
  • University of Virginia Health System (Charlottesville, VA)

Finalists will be awarded $60,000 each in prize money.

The CMS AI Challenge began as an open innovation challenge to develop technology that can be used to predict unplanned hospital and skilled nursing facility admissions, and adverse events within 30 days. The CMS AI Challenge attracted innovators from all sectors – not just from healthcare – to harness artificial intelligence solutions to predict health outcomes.

During Stage 2, Finalists will further develop algorithms that demonstrate how AI tools be used to predict unplanned hospital and skilled nursing facility admissions and adverse events, and will submit additional predictive algorithms to meet a standard target to be established by CMS. At the end of Stage 2 in April 2021, CMS will announce the Grand Prize winner (who will receive up to $1 million in prize money) and Runner-Up (who will receive up to $230,000 in prize money).
