New Study Confirms VisualDx’s AI Improves Diagnostic Accuracy at the Point of Care
A new study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (JID) found that VisualDx’s (@VisualDx) artificial intelligence solution, DermExpert™ , analyzed skin conditions with the same degree of accuracy as primary care physicians (PCPs) referencing a visual aid. The researchers also found that DermExpert was equally effective when identifying diseases in light and dark skin types, suggesting that clinical decision support tools built on diverse data sets can augment physician decision-making and help to reduce medical errors and improve patient outcomes, particularly for patients of color.
University of Iowa Health Care Contracts with Caresyntax to Support Operating Room Safety, Quality, and Standardized Team-Based Assessments

A recent study conducted with collaborators from the University of Vermont and Cedars-Sinai describes the performance of Biocogniv’s (@biocogniv) new AI-COVID™ software. The team found high accuracy in predicting the probability of COVID-19 infection using routine blood tests, which can help hospitals reduce the number of patients referred for scarce PCR testing. Their study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research is available online.
Bayer and Tempus Initiate Collaboration to Advance Patient Access to Genomic Testing and Precision Medicine
Bayer (@Bayer) and Tempus (@TempusLabs), leaders in precision medicine and artificial intelligence (AI), announced a new collaboration designed to provide broader access to genomic testing and tailored treatment approaches for the oncology community. The collaboration will include an initiative to help facilitate patient identification for precision oncology by providing testing, via the Tempus xT broad-panel genomic sequencing assay, for a subset of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), as well as those with radioactive iodine refractory differentiated metastatic thyroid carcinoma (RAIR thyroid cancers). Artificial Intelligence is composed of six different disciplines:
- Natural Language Processing to enable it to communicate successfully in English
- Knowledge Representation to store what it knows or hears
- Automated Reasoning to use the stored information to answer questions and to draw new conclusions
- Machine Learning to adapt to new circumstances and to detect and extrapolate patterns
- Computer Vision to perceive objects
- Robotics to manipulate objects and move about
To build a generally intelligent agent, you need machine learning in addition to the other aspects mentioned above.
Machine Learning is roughly the science of prediction. Given certain knowns (features), you wish to predict some unknowns (targets). The unknown could be structured (e.g. numeric) or unstructured (e.g. a string response).
Deep Learning is a sub field of machine learning where concepts are learned hierarchically. The simplest concepts emerge first, followed by more complicated concepts that build on the simpler ones. Usually, this leads to a simple layered hierarchy of concepts.
