Patient-Mediated Data Exchange Applications for Interoperability

At HIMSS February 20 – 22, Humetrix (@Humetrix) will champion the role of patients as the first line of defense for controlling rising healthcare costs, improving clinical outcomes and directing their own care in what remains a very fragmented healthcare system. The company will participate in the Interoperability Showcase Booth 9000 Hall F, with its award-winning mobile health platform, iBlueButton, which enables patients to immediately receive at any point of care, or request and receive their health records from any federally certified EHR system.

As part of the demo, in partnership with NATE and the Federal Health Architecture (FHA) initiative, Humetrix will show for the first time, iBlueButton’s two-way communication technology using the DIRECT secure messaging protocol. Now, patients can use DIRECT to both request and easily receive their records, seamlessly and securely on their own mobile devices, where iBlueButton turns the data into a longitudinal and actionable health summary, that users can annotate, update, and share at any point of care.

“Healthcare IT policies and investments to drive health information exchange have essentially been directed at providers,” said Dr. Bettina Experton, CEO of Humetrix. “But what we have found is that no amount of regulation or incentives will totally cure the interoperability challenges mainly caused by competitive business barriers that prohibit healthcare providers from exchanging their patients’ health records, driving costly medical errors and redundant care. Such barriers do not exist between a provider and his patient who can become the direct communicator of his health history, empowered by standard-based mobile technologies like iBlueButton that interface with certified EHRs.”

The Humetrix, NATE and the FHA presentation will feature live demonstrations of iBlueButton, showcasing the power of its DIRECT enabled health information exchange solution for requesting, receiving, and sharing health records.

iBlueButton is available for iOS and Android devices, and allows millions of Americans and their caregivers to receive, update, store and share their health records securely on their mobile devices. By providing patients with their own health records, iBlueButton reduces the risk of medical errors and costly redundant tests resulting from an incomplete picture of the patient medical history.
