NeHC University Announces New Programs for Fall 2012

The National eHealth Collaborative’s NeHC University is a web-based education program designed to provide stakeholders with timely and relevant information on health information technology and health information exchange in the US. The University offers introductory and advanced programs focusing on health IT topics, trends, and initiatives.

NeHC has announced its new fall schedule. The schedule includes the continuation of programs highlighting Health IT initiatives of the ONC and learning series on Careers in Health IT and HIE Leadership and Sustainability. The schedule also offers new programs.

The Fall 2012 Course Catalog includes:

The Rural Health IT Landscape, Sept. 11 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm ET:  This series will showcase examples of projects and initiatives that are leveraging health IT to provide effective care in rural and underserved communities.  Earle Rugg, CEO of Rural Health IT Corporation, and Chantal Worzala from the American Hospital Association will kick off the first program in this series, The Rural Health IT Landscape.

ONC Programs During National Health IT Week –  NeHC will host three webinars for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) during Health IT Week.

  • Sept. 12 from 11:00 am -12:00 pm ET, NeHC will have Chief Privacy Officer Joy Pritts, Laura Rosas from ONC’s Privacy Office, and Will Phelps from the Department of Health and Human Services to discuss an online game focused on privacy and security.
  • Sept. 13 from 1:00 pm -2:30 pm ET, the Deputy National Coordinator David Muntz and Doug Fridsma, Director, Office of Science and Technology will lead a discussion on the progress of the Standards and Interoperability Framework.
  • Sept. 14, from 11:00 am -12:00 pm EDT, NeHC will be joined by National Coordinator for Health IT Farzad Mostashari; Carolyn Clancy, Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ); and Patrick Conway, Chief Medical Officer of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), to discuss how ONC, AHRQ, and CMS are collaborating to improve healthcare quality through the use of health IT.

Increasing Medical Record Security,  Sept. 19 from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm ET. As health information exchange becomes more prevalent, privacy and security around user identification will be paramount. This session discusses  medical record security for both physician and patient access.

Standards and Certification Criteria Final Rule Office Hours – Throughout September, NeHC will host Steve Posnack, Director of the Federal Policy Division at ONC, for a series of one hour “Office Hours.” Steve will be available to take attendee questions, give factual feedback, and explain the new concepts in the final rule.

Spotlight Learning Series on Behavioral Health and Health IT,  Sept. 26 from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT. The next program in a series on behavioral health and health IT will highlight a recent survey published by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (NCCBH) entitled “HIT Adoption and Readiness for Meaningful Use in Community Behavioral Health.”

Careers in Health IT: This series highlights educational programs and discusses how students can position themselves for future success. NeHC will also host employers in the field of health IT to discuss their company’s needs and employment outlook. “Health IT Education and Career Opportunities” is scheduled for Oct. 1 from 1:00 pm-2:30 pm ET. NeHC will follow up the program later in the month with a program where health IT experts offer advice on successfully marketing oneself for a position in health IT on Oct. 30 from 1:00 pm -2:30 pm ET.

Spotlight on HIE Leadership and Sustainability, Oct. 16 from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm: NeHC will continue its HIE case studies series with a spotlight on Coastal Connect, Inc. NeHC is currently leading HIE Learning Network workgroups on business sustainability, phasing implementation of HIE services, addressing variations in interoperability standards, and HIE functions to support new payment and delivery models.
