The Hawai’i Health Information Exchange (Hawai’i HIE) is a non-profit organization established in 2006 to enhance care coordination, improve the health outcomes of Hawai’i’s patients and reduce the cost of care for both patients and healthcare providers. In 2009, the Hawai’i HIE was designated by the state to develop a seamless and secure statewide health information exchange that ultimately links to the nationwide health information network. This designation was re-affirmed in a Memorandum of Agreement between the Hawai’i HIE and Governor Neil Abercrombie.
The HIE uses Health eNet to exchange patient information. This is a secure, encrypted electronic system used to exchange and access clinical information, such as transition of care documents, which may include a patient’s medical history, laboratory results, medications, diagnosis, procedures and demographic information.
Current participants in the Hawai’i HIE include the Hawaii Medical Service Association, the Aloha State’s largest insurer, as well as over twelve hospitals and laboratories.
Latest News
In July 2015, the Hawai’i HIE issued a request for proposal for Interface Integration Engine provider so that they may leverage their existing interfaces without major re-investment in new technologies, thereby lowering costs and extending the life of current systems. In other news, the Hawai’i Health Workforce and Health IT Summit will take place on September 19th, 2015, sponsored by the Hawai’i/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Centers and the Hawai’i HIE.

The mission of the Hawai’i HIE, whose motto is “Building Bridges Between Providers,” is to positively transform health care in Hawai’i through efficient and secure health care information between patients and providers to enable a higher standard of quality care statewide. Their vision is a Hawai’i where all residents can receive quality care based on up-to-date health records and physicians have efficient access to patient information to enable sound clinical decisions.
