Colorado State Health Information Exchange (CORHIO)

COThe Colorado Regional Health Information Organization is a non profit, public-private partnership that is improving health care quality for all Coloradans through cost effective and secure implementation of health information exchange (HIE). CORHIO is designated by the State of Colorado to facilitate HIE.

CORHIO reported growth in 2014 was in the triple-digits. The number of participating health care users and data available in the net work grew by 111% and 118% respectively in 2014. This marks the third consecutive year of triple-digit growth rates for the organization.

The CORHIO HIE is one of the largest and most robust health information exchange networks in the United States, containing information for more than four million unique patients. Forty-seven hospitals, more than 2,000 doctors, 24 behavioral health centers, four large medical laboratories and the state health department are currently connected to the CORHIO HIE, with hundreds of additional health care providers and dozens of organizations in the process of connecting.

About CORHIO
CORHIO works closely with and among communities across Colorado to develop and implement secure systems and processes for sharing clinical information. CORHIO collaborates with all health care stakeholders including physicians, hospitals, clinics, behavioral health, public health, long-term care, laboratories, imaging centers, health plans and patients.

The current goals of CORHIO are:

  1. Health information exchange deployed in every community by 2015
  2. 85% of all primary care providers and safety-net providers are meaningful users of electronic health records (EHRs) by 2015
  3. 85% of all providers statewide are meaningful users of EHRs by 2015

CORHIO takes a community approach when developing and implementing HIEs. This safeguards the community’s unique health care needs and goals can be met. While the benefits of HIE to the providers are:

  • Faster access to lab results and radiology reports
  • Streamlined access to patient histories and discharge summaries
  • Community-wide and statewide connectivity
  • Automated physician referral and consult processes
  • Reduced administrative and overhead costs
  • HIPAA-compliant data sharing with other health care providers
