New Tool Helps Health IT Job Seekers
The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) serves more than 64,000 members and is a recognized leader in the health information management (HIM) space. The organization provides professional certification to advance the HIM profession, an increasingly demanding role in the era of EHR.
To help students and job seekers in their career development AHIMA recently launched their interactive online career map. The map gives guidance to users on understanding the path for tracking and finding jobs in the HIM industry.
The map and accompany resources are a treasure trove of information that includes 53 current job roles and 13 emerging roles. Roles are organized into six categories. Users mouse over job roles listed under the following categories:
- Compliance/Risk Management
- Education/Communication
- Informatics/Data Analysis
- IT/Infrastructure
- Operations Medical Records Administration
- Revenue Cycle Management Coding & Billing
As you point and click your way through any job role, a light box pops up giving a snippet of information about the role and its career promotional path. Users can then click on a Full Description button to read in details on general job responsibilities and qualifications. The map also includes alternate titles for some roles because of terminology differences across the industry.
The site also provides information on AHIMA certification and a Health Information 101 menu that provides information on:
- What is Health Information Management
- Why Choose Health Information Management as a career
- Health Information Management FAQ
- HIM Industry News
According to AHIMA officials, the map was created in response to the rising demand for HIM professionals. Lynne Thomas Gordon, CEO of AHIMA, said “the map is not only ‘a one-stop shop’ to learn about careers, it defines the profession like never before by showing where the field is now and where it is heading.”
