The Overburdened Provider: Right to Access Edition

In healthcare, regulations and red tape are nothing new. However, recent times have been fraught with tedium thanks to new programs, regulations and guidance; programs like Meaningful Use, MACRA, MIPS, the Affordable Care Act, the 21st Century Cures Act; regulations that change how healthcare providers are paid, regulations that publicize providers’ quality of care, guidance that all but requires Electronic Health Record (EHR) and robust information technology implementation, and guidance indicating increased scrutiny over HIPAA compliance.
The administrative side of healthcare is certainly alive, but perhaps it’s not well. One recent change still has many particularly riddled — the updated guidance on the Right to Access health information under the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
