Host of Dr. Nick: The Incrementalist – #TheIncrementalist

On this episode I talk to Shai Gozani MD, PhD, President and CEO of Neurometrix – a company focusing on improving the diagnosis and treatment of disease using digital technology. Shai has a background as an electrical engineer and worked for Bell Labs back in the mid 1980’s and studied for his PhD in Neurobiology focusing on signal processing listening to crickets and how they process information.

Neurometrix was originally a short term activity for him but has proven to be so productive and interesting that 20+ years on they are still innovating with their most recent focus around the Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) that builds on the Gate Control Theory of Pain and is starting to understand the molecular basis for these effects. Part of the focus came as a result of a desire to address the opioid crisis with alternative non-pharmaceutical methods for pain relief and they have made some incredible progress in providing solutions for pain relief for some intractable and challenging painful conditions with their Quell wearable pain relief technology. On that journey they understood that 90% of the solution development is easy, it is the last 5-10% that is challenging.

Listen in to hear about his Incremental Learning points that included:

  • Moving from the Lab to real world is really hard
  • Small incremental improvements across all the aspects of a solution are key elements to successful execution and creation og real world Digital solutions
  • Getting “Ultimate Precision” is on the path to developing a successful quantitative measurements of disease and treatments
  • The gap between the art of medicine and the need for precision based science is the opportunity space for innovation

About the Show
For years Dr. Nick van Terheyden aka Dr. Nick, has served as a voice on the impact of new technologies on healthcare, earning a reputation as a leading authority on where the future of medicine is going. Combining powers of observation and real world experience, Dr. Nick has seen many predictions come true and makes the case that innovations in healthcare can be accomplished incrementally, not just by moonshot events. Tune in to hear Dr. Nick: The Incrementalist and his guests discuss what the future of healthcare looks like, how we will get there, and what it will take to improve healthcare for all.
