HIMSS Analytics Brief Looks at EHR Adoption Trends Since 2009
HIMSS Analytics has released its 6th Annual Ambulatory EHR study. The study looks at EHR adoption trends dating back to the passing of the HITECH Act in 2009. This year’s study also looks at provider plans for meeting Accountable Care and Health Information Exchange (HIE). According to HIMSS Analytics, this study in particular addresses which practices have attested to Stage 2 Meaningful Use.
Key findings from the study include:
- There is heavy interest in adopting the necessary technology to help make practices more efficient and meet Meaningful Use criteria
- Data suggests sales in the EHR/PM markets reached a tipping point in 2011 with overall adoption slowing in 2012 and 2013
- The market is generally favorable towards HIEs with a notable degree of uncertainty surrounding Accountable Care plans

HIMSS Analytics Also Releases Research Measuring Progress in EHR Adption for Hospitals
HIMSS Analytics has created the EMR Adoption Model, a 8-step process known as the EMRAM model, for hospitals to track progress against other across the U.S. According to the latest research, 3 percent of hospitals now meet Stage 7.
Hospitals achieving Stage 7 of the model are recognized as ones giving advanced patient care that relies on EHR technology and other health IT applications.
Free to all healthcare providers, EMRAM scores are derived from participation in HIMSS Analytics annual study. According to HIMSS Analytics, participation will help providers:
- Begin to meet application requirements, working toward the final level, Stage 7
- Compare progress with other organizations, and across organization departments
