Why Integrated Risk Management is Becoming the Preferred Approach to Data Security
By Grant Elliott, President and CEO, Ostendio
Twitter: @ostendio

There’s an inherent risk to doing business, particularly business that touches personal data. For years now, the business community – from healthcare to retail – has focused on the threat prevention aspect of data security. We train employees on compliance, how to recognize PHI and personally identifiable information (PII), and to protect data privacy. All good things. The exhausting part of the process is knowing that data is always going to be at risk. That’s why Integrated Risk Management (IRM) offers a more reasonable, strategic approach. When the validity of a PDR is questionable, the patient should be contacted to clarify and confirm consent. Here are additional strategies for handling attorney requests submitted under the guise of a PDR: Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

Twitter: @matt_r_fisher

After a slow start to the year in terms of HIPAA settlement, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is trying to finish the year with a bang. Since September 20, 2018, OCR has announced four different HIPAA settlements. The nature of the conduct underlying each settlement has varied widely. As such, it remains difficult to determine what facts or circumstances will most interest OCR in pursuing an issue for the imposition of a penalty. Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

The line “seven swans a swimming” from the classic Twelve Days of Christmas has been on my mind lately. I see swans gliding past my house on the Chesapeake Bay during the day, and hear them always “cooing” at night, as I drift off to sleep. What does this have to do with Health IT? Well, swans symbolize grace and beauty – and over the past year there have been many swan-ly signs in the area of health data exchange: Continue reading on HITECHAnswers.net…

Earlier this year, I submitted a response (and posted it in this blog) to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Request for Information (RFI) on a draft of their Strategic Plan for Data Science. My main concern was that while there was nothing in the report I did not agree with, I believed there needed to be more attention to the science of data science.
