Health IT Expo Extras

The Health IT Expo took place in New Orleans last week and over three days the conference offered an opportunity to learn the latest in health IT analytics, healthcare security, patient engagement, and EHR optimization to name just a few highlights. Networking is always on the agenda if you are with John Lynn’s events.

At the event I was able to meet up with some of the speakers and attendees to get some insights on what they were talking about at the expo. See all my extras on our Soundcloud channel.

Adam Klass, Chief Technology Officer of VigiLanz
We aren’t far from the day when health data becomes the connective tissue for all of healthcare. Bringing that data together not only where and when it’s needed but also with the appropriate context is the challenge ahead of us. Adam was part of a panel discussing how to streamline data integration efforts, how to determine whether to use APIs or FHIR (or both!) and what pitfalls to avoid when leading a data project. I caught up with Adam to discuss predictive tools that can help hospitals and clinicians in identifying and diagnosing sepsis in early onset.

Lee Horner, CEO of Synzi
Lee presented on how virtual care technology brings quality care closer to the patient – especially critical for engaging the “sickest of the sick” – in a more convenient and cost-effective manner. Lee is recognized as an innovator in healthcare IT and has more than 25 years of enterprise operating experience. Hear Lee talk about the concept of virtual care rather than telehealth, how it differs from what we think of traditional telehealth.

Mike Semel, President of Semel Consulting
Mike Semel, IT Security & Compliance expert, thought leader, and best-selling author of How to Avoid HIPAA Headaches, reviewed data breaches and compliance violations, and the lessons you can learn from the misfortunes of others. Mike also discussed your hidden risks and compliance requirements, beyond HIPAA, and what you can to do protect your patients, your organization, and your career. I spoke to Mike about why he wrote the book and how practices really know if they are secure and HIPAA compliant.
